　　A Receptor-oriented Study on the Chinese-English Translation of Public Signs

　　接受者角度下的公示語英譯

　　When we review resent year’s developments in China, for example, the acceding to WTO, 2008 Beijing Olympic, 2010 Shanghai EXPO, 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and so on, we found out that China had become more and more important in the world and faced bigger challenges. Millions foreigners come to China every year. They travel here, eat here, play here, do business here, even live here, but sometimes most of them are confused with the public signs, because the signs transmit different meanings. There may be misunderstanding among cultures, distinct expressions of languages or different messages to the receptors. As far as the public sign is concerned, it is a kind of language to the public. But those wrong translations damage the basic function.

　　The famous translator Nida used to say, the relationship between receptor and message should be substantially the same as that which existed between the original receptor and the message. In my mind, the translation of public signs should focus on the readers, and during the translation, we should apply the relevant policies to bring the readers’ aesthetic judgment into play and to achieve the basic function of public signs.

　　In this thesis, we will discuss the features of public sign and typical structures about English public sign. In addition, the thesis will analyse the factors, for example, culture, language, religion, and so on, which influence the translation through the translator and the reader. How to make the English signs be accepted more than correct is the main part in the thesis. Several suggestions will be represented. They may be useful in the work of translation on public signs one day.

　　I hope the thesis will be helpful not only on the base of theory, but also in the aspect of practical application.

　　My new views about the study on the C-E translation of public signs from the English receptor’s perspective. This thesis include not only professional definitions, vivid examples but also deep analyses. The main part, which tells the methods about how to translate correctly, is the shining point.
