　　當(dāng)Ross提出結(jié)婚這個想法時，Emily說他瘋了，因為Emily與Ross才相識了六個星期。Ross覺得相識的時間并不是個問題，他和前妻Carol在結(jié)婚之前可是相處了四年，最后Carol都已懷上了Ross的孩子，可他們還是以離婚告終，因為Carol是個同性戀(Look, huh, I was with Carol for four years before we got married and I wound up divorced from a pregnant lesbian.)。結(jié)婚可是兩個人的事，所以Ross說：I mean, this, this makes sense for us. make sense 是個常用的詞組，sense作為名詞的解釋之一就是“意義”，因此 make sense就表示“理解”，“…有意義”，比如：Read this and tell me if it makes sense. 這個詞組還常常以這樣的形式出現(xiàn)，it makes sense (for somebody) to do something，如：It makes sense to save money while you can.

　　Ross又接著說服Emily說他們的第一次約會感覺就很好，結(jié)果兩人跑到佛蒙特州共渡周末去了(Come on! I mean, on our first date we ended up spending the whole weekend in Vermont!)。end up 和先前出現(xiàn)的wind (wound) up 意思差不多，都表示說事情最終以什么樣的一種方式收場，只是end up的結(jié)果往往出人意料，而wind up 的結(jié)果則往往不如人意，例如：

　　It was dreadfully cold, it was snowing fast, and almost dark； the evening----the last evening of the old year was drawing in. But, cold and dark as it was, a poor little girl, with bare head and feet, was still wandering about the streets. When she left her home she had slippers on, but they were much too large for her； indeed, properly, they belonged to her mother, and had dropped off her feet whilst1 she was running very fast across the road, to get out of the way of two carriages. One of the slippers was not to be found, the other had been snatched up by a little boy, who ran off with it thinking it might serve him as a doll's cradle.
