Dear xxx,I plan to study for Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Case Western ReserveUniversity with special interests in metabolism, macromolecular synthesis, andprotein crystal growth. I have had plentiful preparations. First, when being anundergraduate in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University,I got very extensive and intensive education. I took many courses on chemistryand the related subjects, and earned high scores for most of them. Second, mymajor, Polymer, can be put into good use in Biochemistry programs becausePolymer is closely related with biological Macromolecule. Third, I have workingexperience that enriches my theory and laboratory skills.

From 1990 to now, I have been engaged as an Assistant Engineer by theResearch institute, Beijing Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation (RIBYPC)。 In thefirst year, I was in charge of a 5-litre reactor for polymerization ofCarboxylated Butadiene-Styene Latex. Then I was transferred to another researchgroup to synthesize PET/PHB copolymer, a kin of polyester, which has theproperty of Liquid Crystal. I am the assistant head of the group. We can preparethe novel polymer with high molecule weight and excellent property in a 2-litrestainless steel reactor. During this monomers, with purity of more than 99.99%;this made my leader very satisfied.

More than four years of working experiences expand my capacity. I oftenmake use of NMR, X-ray, DSC and other instrumental methods for research. Amongthem, I am most skilled in NMR reactors, I have experiences on solving problemsof Engineering and Mechanics. What is more, I am familiar with computeroperation and some application software. The above information about myspecialty may be helpful for you to evaluate me.

It is said that the 21st century will be the age of Life Science. I hope toenter the esteemed Case Western Reserve University to face this challenge. I amconfident tat I shall be an excellent fellow. After completing my graduatestudy, I would like to return to my homeland and make use of my knowledge toserve the people.

By the way, I would like to give thanks to my parents. Being their oldestson, I am offered the most formal education and the deepest love. I never forgetthe 18-years life with them. Twelve years in the countryside and six years inShengli Oil Field bestowed me the character of diligence, resolution, andperseverance, as well as the deep love of nature and life. I am also indebted tomy dear wife. Without her never-ended encouragement and support in these years,I could not become closer and closer to the gate of the eminent Case W.

  Yours sincerely,xxx

Dear xx,

The sheer breadth of psychology appeals to me as there seems to be a rangeof exciting topics to explore. I find myself engaged with this vibrant subjectand enjoy reading about its various branches. A quote by Alfred Marshall, thefamous economist, best explains my choice for this subject. He stated that withpsychology there is always the 'pleasure of the chase'.

However, I am most passionate about the biological aspects of psychology.A-level biology has deepened my interest in the anatomy of key organs and howthey function. One of my particular fields of interest is cognitiveneuroscience. The intriguing world of cognition when merged with the scientificstudy of the brain, helps unlock some of the secrets inside the mind. Moreover, memory, decision making and perception, to name but a few, are all fascinatingand significant topics. Being enthusiastic about science, I consider myself wellsuited for the experimental nature of this degree.

I have attended master classes on 'Psychology and the mad mind'. Thiscovered some of the more shocking aspects of psychology. For example, WalterFreeman's transorbital lobotomy of the brain, the grim procedure and thecontroversy that surrounded it. This experience has not dissuaded me but ratherhas given me an insight into abnormal psychology.

Working part time as a market research interviewer, I have interviewedhundreds of participants from all ages and backgrounds, for organisation such asthe NHS. This experience has enhanced my communication skills significantly. Myinterview assessment rating in communication was full marks, something rarelyawarded.

Under the 'V' programme I have committed to over 80 hours of voluntarywork. Furthermore, my total should be over 160 hours by the end of this year. Acareer in psychology requires competence in working with people. Through myvoluntary work I have developed social skills which should prove useful in myfuture career as well as university. Acting as a personal mentor within school,my duties involve supporting particular children with learning difficulties, working with those individuals in class. 'Paired reading' is another scheme I aminvolved in. A younger student reads a passage to me and whilst listening Iprovide assistance and encouragement as required. Outside of school, I payvisits to an elderly care home and give company to the residents there, learningto work in a caring capacity at the same time.

My chosen sport is Football. This is my third year playing competitivefootball for a local club. As a result, I have learnt to appreciate theimportance of teamwork and being a reliable member of the team. Serving asassistant football coach, for a lower school year, is something I take greatpride in. My 'Junior Sports Leader Award' has given me experience in executingsports lessons and has helped me to become a better leader. Also, I playfootball socially with friends at a university sports centre. Walking throughthe campus for the first time, I was immediately inspired by universitylife.

A challenging yet exciting time is what I see ahead of me. The efforts putinto my academic study, part time and voluntary work, as well as sports, hashelped me to lead a dynamic life. I am keen to invest this same level ofactivity, if not more, throughout university. In conclusion, I am ready tocapitalize on the university experience but above all, utilize my zeal forpsychology to gain a reputable degree.

  Yours sincerely,

xxx

  Dear x,

I intend to continue the study of History at university. As a subject Ihave been interested in since childhood, I enjoy studying the past and how ithas shaped our future. The study of History allows us to view the mistakes andsuccesses of the past and employ them to the future. a??History is a guide tonavigation in perilous times. History is who we are and why we are the way weare. (McCullough) History allows society to form an identity and to advancethrough learned tolerance and understanding.Last year in AS History I studied heunification of Italy which was key in my understanding of history. It wasfascinating to explore how Italy came together as one country from severalstates and to discuss whether Italy would have formed alone or whether inrequired to push from those such as Garibaldi or Cavour.

Having spent many years studying modern history and decided to take it uponmyself to expand my knowledge into ancient history. Earlier this year I read abook called Cleopatra by Lucy Hughes- Hallet. It was interesting to read aboutsuch a famous and influential woman of history from another womans perspective.Often Cleopatra is portrayed as femme fatale- as in the portrait by John WilliamWaterhouse or Shakespeare who said a??other women cloy the appetites they feed:but she makes hungry, where most she satisfies.

She is often seen by historians as a seductive, potentially poisonoustemptress, however this is not necessarily how Hughes-Hallet interprets her; toher she is plainer, more ambitious and less cruel. I think it is difficult toseparate fact from fiction when it comes to ancient history and especially inthis case someone as constantly redesigned as Cleopatra.

History has taught me to make substantiated judgments and to interpret andanalyse external material as well as my own opinions. I find History intriguingbecause it gives me the opportunity to study the development of human societyover a long-term. My inquisitive mind has further contributed to my enthusiasmfor the subject and I enjoy working independently. But all three of my subjectshave honed my writing skills, to be able to select and organise knowledge andcommunicate it coherently and concisely. More specifically, Sociology has beenhelpful in discerning social trends, and understanding something of the humanpsyche; and English Literature allows me to study works, in context. All theseskills will enable me to read History at university.

I enjoy visiting museums and monuments of history when I have theopportunity. I particularly love the trench experience at the Imperial WarMuseum and more ancient history- such as the ancient human occupation of Britain- at the National History Museum.

I work well within a team, but also have the necessary attributes to leadif I am called upon, demonstrated in my active participation in my school'sCharities Committee for the past six years, organising various charity eventsthroughout the school. My work as secretary of the Charities Committee allows meto represent the school in the community and has taught me management andorganisation skills. In school I have also been a keen participant in theorchestra in which I am lead violinist in school and also play for the borough.I have been involved in several school plays either back stage, in the orchestraor as part of the cast. I have also been involved in numerous school sportsteams, including the netball and athletics teams. I am a naturally cheerfulperson who has a positive outlook on life, but with the maturity necessary foruniversity, and as such, I feel that I am fully prepared for the academic stepup to degree level. I greatly anticipating the opportunity not only to go touniversity, but specifically to read History as I know it will provide me withvital life skills, as well as giving me access to a potentially wide and variedcareer within the specialty.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear _

“Women aren’t suited for such hard subjects,” my friend Seung—woo told mewith a smug smile。 Seung—woo didn’t think that mathematics was a field forwomen。 Although he was my age and wasn’t tied down by most traditional beliefs,he believed that only men could be true mathematicians。 The majority of peoplein my country,South Korea, believe the gender stereotype that women areinherently inferior to men in mathematics。 I strongly disagree with thisoutdated notion。 Women are just as capable of outstanding mathematicalachievement as men,and I am determined to help disprove gender stereotypesthrough my example。

Mathematics has always given me a deep sense of satisfaction。 Even inelementary school,I was attracted to the precision and logic inherent inmathematical formulas。 I devoured as much mathematical information as I could, collecting theorems of mathematicians such as Gauss and Euclid like otherstudents collected stamps。 I had the opportunity to test my skills and knowledgein high school, when I competed in several national math competitions, includingthe Korea Mathematical Olympiad。 My strong showing in these venues, along withmy top math grades and perfect math score on the Korean SAT,bolstered myconfidence in my abilities。 I was proud to prove to others that I was capable ofperforming at the highest levels。

Despite my strong interest and achievement in mathematics,it has beendifficult for me to realize my potential due to the Korean educational system, which emphasizes cramming for tests instead of critical understanding。 Moresignificantly,Korean social biases against women in the fields of math andscience have discouraged me from pursuing my love of mathematics。 Thus,I wantto study in the United States, where I will be able follow my dream withoutthese constraints。 For about a year,I have taken English language courses at auniversity in Washington,D。C。,where I have gained a glimpse of Americanacademic life from the inside。 I am very impressed by American students’devotion to their studies and the system’s ability to support each student’sgoals。 I am therefore especially interested in attending Boston College, which,in addition to offering outstanding math and science courses,is renowned forits emphasis on cultivating students’ full development,or "cura personalis。" AtBoston College,I will be able to focus on my goal of becoming an excellentmathematician。

I am determined to succeed, but I know that I must overcome many challenges。Sometimes, when I feel discouraged by the obstacles I face as a Korean woman inmathematics,I imagine what my life will be like ten years from now。 Armed witha Boston College degree,I will visit my old friend Seung—woo。 We will havecorresponded over the years,so he’ll already know about the many mathematicsarticles published in my name, and he will be well aware of the internationalacclaim they received。 I will savor the day when Seung—woo admits that I wascorrect in believing that I could succeed as a mathematician。 I will be proud toknow that partly due to my achievements, the door to increased opportunities forwomen in math and science has swung open a little bit wider.

  Yours sincerely

  Dear ,

My most important aim for the next few years is to further my studies ofHistory. Studying the subject at GCSE and A Level has extended my interest inSocial and European History, and how this relates to world History. The subjecthas enhanced my understanding and interest of current affairs and contemporaryissues, which I enjoy following closely. As a student of History, I aim toextend my analytical and presentational skills. Once given an area to study, Ilike to research independently, but also working with others. My time at SixthForm College has enabled me to improve my reliability, punctuality and abilityto work individually, while coping with the demands of exams and deadlines. TheAS levels I selected; English, Geography, History and Politics complemented eachother well, enabling me to use the knowledge of one subject to develop myunderstanding of another. They have also extended my abilities in research, essay and report writing. My AS results proved pleasing, after analysing myresults, they have given me realistic targets for the year ahead. I haveevaluated my progress of my first year in order to find weaknesses in exam andstudy technique and I am working on these for a hopefully successful outcome forthe years ahead.

In addition to my academic studies, I have achieved qualifications in firstaid, and I feel confident to administer first aid in unlikely situations. Overthe past two years, I have helped with a youth holiday scheme connected with myChurch where I had responsibility for looking after and helping children. In myspare time, I enjoy reading non-fiction books, and travelling to see many partsof the country. My Duke of Edinburgh award scheme enabled me to deal effectivelywith decision making within a group.

Out of College, a part-time job at a newsagent, over the past two years hasgiven me responsibilities such as dealing with customers, stock and largeamounts of money, and also being organised and punctual. At my secondary school,I helped to set up a student council, as I felt that there were student issuesthat needed to be dealt with. Other responsible positions I have held are bothprefect, and fifth year representative at my previous school, and formrepresentative on the student council at my present college. Work experience atan Estate Agent in Cambridge gave me good experience of working in a city andcommuting, and also insight into an area of business. I hope to travel and workat an orphanage near to Jakarta, which I have maintained links with, and also toNew Zealand. My career prospects are left open for now, but I do have interestsin research and education.

My main priority for now is to complete my A Levels to the best of myability and to go on to University, not just for the degree but for the entireexperience it has to offer and I look forward to moving on, learning and meetingnew people.

  Yours sincerely,

  Dear xx,

“The world of computers is growing at an un-recordable rate everyday, computers are the most influential tools in our lives, they are our present andfuture. In my opinion nothing on the planet can measure the exponential growthand excitement in the computing industry, and industry which I want to be a partof, particularly Software Engineering. As long as computers are around, SoftwareEngineering will take place after all, people need to write and code theprograms like Microsoft Word, and code your games, they don’t just appear. Mygoal is to be part of a team who creates worthwhile, efficient and usefulsoftware for consumers. And the Engineering course if I work at it, which Iwill, will be the key to my success, my current computing A-Level course is agood first step for my goal.

Other courses I am currently studying are Mathematics and Accountancy,Maths is also very important to my selected career, Maths is a universallanguage, it is used by everything, and is very involved with Computers. I enjoynumber work, so an obvious choice at A-Level was Accountancy although I findthis subject less challenging than others, its still interesting and fun, but itdoesn’t grip me like Computing and is not an immediate careerchoice.

I am hard working and currently work at my local ASDA store, I am on theProvisions/Chilled section and am part of a big team, we each depend on eachother to meet deadlines, its quite a demanding job as you have to deal and betrained with customer services and complaints as we work on the shop floorduring open hours. I currently work a 16hour weekend for ASDA, which providesthe money I need for hobbies.

My hobbies include football, going out to the cinema and the odd club orpub, shopping for myself and others, my PC, and the most expensive of all, mygirlfriend. I also like to swim, I find it quite relaxing and it is goodexercise. I also love to eat out, going out for meals with friends is unrivalledby almost any social gathering including clubs and pubs, I love sitting around atable talking and joking about with friends while drinking and eating, itssomething I try and do at least once a month. Friends are very important to meand I try to be the best friend I can.”

  Dear x,

This document is being submitted in support of my application for admissioninto your program。

Born in June x, I grew up in Lanzhou, a city that boasts of a history ofthousands of years and a cultural heritage that is as colorful as it is old。 Fewcities, either in China or beyond, can match it in the richness of architecturalstyles。 Stradding the upper Yellow River that sired the Chinese civilization,Lanzhou prides itself in both her past glory laden in the ancient structures onthe north bank and her new found prosperity oozing out of the dazzlinghigh—rises in the south。 Although, as a child, I was not always able toarticulate my admiration for such striking contrast, I constantly beheld thecity's landscape in awe。 I began to understand, at that young age, thatarchitecture can be a powerful symbol of culture, a people and the spirit of anera。

My first intellectual mentor, one of my parents' best friends, was anartist seasoned in oil painting and photography。 She often brought me with herwhen she traveled, and it was on these trips that her creative mind worked infull gear。 I thus observed how human hands could work wonders by recreating thebeauty of natural scenery in the form of sketches, paintings and photos。 Whatwas more important, I got to know that there are professions of creative workthat calls for imagination and craftsmanship。

Fervent with creative art and fascinated with architectural design, Ientered in 1992 into the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University,China's top engineering school, on the strength of my outstanding performance inthe highly competitive National University Entrance Examinations。

At Tsinghua, I went through five years of vigorous training and thusacquired exquisite skills in drawing and design。 Since I understood from earlychildhood that inspiration often comes from nature, I traveled far and widethroughout China's vast territory, setting my foot even in outlying Tibet andXingjiang, both in the country's westernmost interior。 These travels allowed meto trace modern China's culture to its different sources, and the variety notonly deeply impressed me but also fired my imagination。 In my graduationproject, Cashi Contemporary Art Museum in Xinjiang, I successfully blended anatural environment into my artistic design by using a system of watercirculation to support and sustain the building。 As the most significantresource in an agricultural enclave surrounded by desert, water represents hopefor both the people and their land。 With the water circulation system, thebuilding took on added vitality。

In mid—, I graduated with my B。 S。 and took a job as a designer withthe Beijing—based “company。” My career as an architect thus took off。

Once I have settled into the real world of architectural design, Ideveloped my career path quickly, playing substantial roles in a stream ofprojects。 To date, my most significant responsibility has been to work as a maindesigner in (a key state) project, in which I led a group of my colleagues inmeeting a daunting challenge。 In addition to gaining a profound understanding ofthe technical difficulties necessarily attendant to such large—scale projects, Ilearned to work effectively within a team that also included my clients andcolleagues。 The teamwork thus not only strengthened my professional competenceat conceptual and technical design but also honed my leadership skills that canbe put to good use in other situations。 As a result, I now feel even moreconfident of myself than I was before。

My experience in general, and the six years of frequent traveling inparticular, has left an indelible mark on my intellectual development。 As I cannow readily appreciate a society's cultural, historical and socio—politicalimpact on its architectural styles, I now try to reflect my own cultural andsocial background in my own designs。 These days, I view architecture not just asa career but, more importantly, as an expression of my professional progress, and I fell that it is an view more compatible with Western rather than Chinesepedagogy。 In any case, I have already been through China's best school forarchitectural studies, and I am convince that the further development of myprofessional qualifications requires more advanced training in a school likeyours。 I believe that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will endowme with a broader vision and more profound insights, with which I can make stillmore contribution to my motherland China。

  Yours sincerely,

  XXX
