Dear Sir or Madam,

I am with great pleasure to submit this personal statement in support of myapplication for continuing my university education in your esteemed universityand wish you could give my application a positive and favorable assessment.

Currently, I am a junior student in International College of Hubei NormalUniversity majoring in Accounting. Thus, I have obtained great knowledge aboutbusiness for the past three years. Depending on that, I have determined topursue a Bachelor degree at your distinguished university. There are therereasons leading to me choose business, the most important reason is that I amvery interested in business. In my opinion, handling good business is the sameas successful work of art. That’s an exciting thing. The second reason is that Ihave already learnt it for three years, so I want to broaden my knowledge aboutbusiness which will benefit my future life. The third reason is that I want tobecome a successful business lady which is my dream all the time.

To be honesty, I am an average student but I have diligent and strongconfident heart. I believe that a good attitude can change bad situation. So Iam always keeping a positive attitude on my life. I never ever give up anychance of promoting my study. During my three years in Hubei Normal University,Inever fail a class and always do my best for assignment. However,in my mind, social activity is as the same important as class study. In my spare time, Itook part in student union and took charge of minister in arts department. Ourwell-organized activities attracted many students to practice themselves. Lastsummer, I joined the Work and Travel Programme to be a staff in an Americancompany for three months. I made good use of that chance to improve my oralEnglish and tasted western culture. I think I can understand and adapt to aforeign culture in a short period.

I firmly believe that anyone could acquire success by their right way andfighting. This is one of the reasons why I want to go abroad. What’s more, Iwant to taste and accept some western education. I hope that I can learn moredifferences between Chinese and British university education and widen myhorizon. Furthermore,as we know, UK is a very modern country. It owns the mostadvanced education system and top universities in the world. And graceful schoolenvironments deeply attract me. By the way, if I can learn in your university Iwould cherish and appreciate this chance. In the future, I also mean to applyMaster’s Degree in UK. But after that, I will go back to my country and look fora job related to business.

I really want to own a colorful campus life in your school, further developmy overall capabilities including organizational ability, teamwork spirit etc. Ibelieve I can adapt to a foreign life and acquire best degree. With all theabove mentioned, in terms of my understanding of business and my enthusiasm forit, I hope that I can be up to the standard of the admission requirements inyour university. I believe that my strong interest in this subject. last, mypositive attitude and comprehensive ability will facilitate my successfulcompletion of the proposed program. Thank you for your time!

Dear teacher:

My most important aim for the next few years is to further my studies ofHistory. Studying the subject at GCSE and A Level has extended my interest inSocial and European History, and how this relates to world History. The subjecthas enhanced my understanding and interest of current affairs and contemporaryissues, which I enjoy following closely. As a student of History, I aim toextend my analytical and presentational skills. Once given an area to study, Ilike to research independently, but also working with others. My time at SixthForm College has enabled me to improve my reliability, punctuality and abilityto work individually, while coping with the demands of exams and deadlines. TheAS levels I selected; English, Geography, History and Politics complemented eachother well, enabling me to use the knowledge of one subject to develop myunderstanding of another. They have also extended my abilities in research, essay and report writing. My AS results proved pleasing, after analysing myresults, they have given me realistic targets for the year ahead. I haveevaluated my progress of my first year in order to find weaknesses in exam andstudy technique and I am working on these for a hopefully successful outcome forthe years ahead.

In addition to my academic studies, I have achieved qualifications in firstaid, and I feel confident to administer first aid in unlikely situations. Overthe past two years, I have helped with a youth holiday scheme connected with myChurch where I had responsibility for looking after and helping children. In myspare time, I enjoy reading non-fiction books, and travelling to see many partsof the country. My Duke of Edinburgh award scheme enabled me to deal effectivelywith decision making within a group.

Out of College, a part-time job at a newsagent, over the past two years hasgiven me responsibilities such as dealing with customers, stock and largeamounts of money, and also being organised and punctual. At my secondary school,I helped to set up a student council, as I felt that there were student issuesthat needed to be dealt with. Other responsible positions I have held are bothprefect, and fifth year representative at my previous school, and formrepresentative on the student council at my present college. Work experience atan Estate Agent in Cambridge gave me good experience of working in a city andcommuting, and also insight into an area of business. I hope to travel and workat an orphanage near to Jakarta, which I have maintained links with, and also toNew Zealand. My career prospects are left open for now, but I do have interestsin research and education.

My main priority for now is to complete my A Levels to the best of myability and to go on to University, not just for the degree but for the entireexperience it has to offer and I look forward to moving on, learning and meetingnew people.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

In "Das Vorleser" by Bernard Schlink, the main character asserts that decisions can have no influence on our behaviour. In many ways I think this is true. There are times when we can consciously make a decision, justify it, yet we cant go through with it. I am curious as to why this is, as I have always been fascinated by behaviour. A-Level Psychology has provided me with some answers, yet I am eager to learn more.

Cognitive Psychology is one of my main interests because I believe that the best way to understand peoples behaviour is to try to understand the processes that take place in decision making, in remembering and also at times when we dont even realise them, such as during the perception of our surrounding environment. I also like it because of its links to neurosciences, which I have found intriguing because of the links between brain and behaviour. Recently, I have been reading articles on mirror neurons in Scientific American Mind, which I found compelling because it would appear to explain many of the processes engaged in learning. I found Kandels work with sea slugs fascinating as well because it would seem to explain memory at a biological level, but I feel that there is still much to discover, as I think that all behaviour could be explained in biological terms. I think this should be investigated using the experimental method, with the challenge in doing so making it all the more exciting.

I am also very interested in mental disorders. What compel me are the relationships between various biological and environmental factors which can induce them. Richard P. Bentalls Madness Explained gave me an insight into these relationships, but I also found this book interesting because of the implications for clinical psychology. His theory for treating psychological symptoms rather than whole disorders could be more beneficial for patients due to the lack of reliability in the traditional method of diagnosis and treatment. Despite this, I am sceptical whether this approach would actually eliminate the problem, however he would assert that it does.

I consider myself an excellent candidate to study Psychology as I have a strong work ethic, I am motivated to extend my learning beyond the classroom with reading around the subject and attend lectures organised by the Royal Institute in London when I can (the most recent of which discussing infidelity from a psychological viewpoint) and I am very capable of keeping to deadlines in spite of my many extra curricular activities. I am also a responsible and reliable person as these are some of the qualities required for being a Prefect.

One of these extra curricular activities is Student Researchers. Currently, I am the Head of Qualitative Research and we have to design qualitative questionnaires, distribute them and analyse them. At times this can be quite challenging, especially our first project, which was undertaken during our AS exams. So far we have completed two projects, one exploring the students views on learning and another investigating the students views on grades and feedback. I gained excellent experience with researching, analysing and evaluating evidence, drawing conclusions and exploring the implications of these conclusions, which I feel will particularly help me in studying Psychology.

Outside of school, I referee for youth and senior football. This is challenging because of the unpredictability and aggressiveness of some players, whom I must keep control of, often under intense pressure, yet I also find it rejuvenating as it is a break from studying. Since March, I have been in the refereeing promotion scheme, which pushes my ability as a referee and also enhances my organisational skills. I also enjoy playing bass guitar or socialising with friends.

I am eager to study Psychology and the prospect excites me greatly. I strongly believe I am an excellent candidate and I hope that I will be offered a place at your university.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

I have always had an interest in language and the arts. This has led to afascination with literature and fundamentally, the poignancy and exuberance onecan convey through the written word. For me, English Literature feels moreuninhibited and complete, mainly because a text is something very personal toits creator, giving it a more individual dimension than other subjects, feedingthe imagination as well as the intellect. However, I cant truly be immersed insomething without finding it challenging. I find the task of searching for amessage in a book a demanding affair, forcing myself to focus every inch of myemotional and rational faculties to extract the authors possible meanings andpresent an original, credible interpretation. My favourite writers include JackKerouac, Allen Ginsberg and others from the Beat Generation. In addition, Ienjoy Victorian authors including Dickens and Joseph Conrad. This wide scope ofBritish and American literature houses a myriad of genres, topics and plotswhich directly or indirectly apply to the way we live in present day Westernsociety. For example, Ive found On the Road by Kerouac to be a poignantexpression of a mans journey outside the perimeters of the average Americanlife which Kerouac paints as banal. His only motivation to travel is toexperience, the ragged and ecstatic joy of pure being.

I am enthusiastic about all the subjects Ive taken at A Level, consequently my college experience has been rewarding both personally andacademically. Through Modern History and Philosophy Ive developed the skill offormulating cogent arguments and articulating them succinctly, either orally orin writing. Furthermore, all my subjects have taught me to confidently expressmy opinions while maintaining open-mindedness in evaluating opposing ones. Thecontent of my subjects and the concepts and knowledge assessed in them has ledme to transfer skills Ive learnt from one subject to another. For example, Iassessed the play, The Birthday Party in relation to existential ontology, illustrating the extent to which my subjects complement each other.

My cultural interests reflect my academic pursuits and the way I expressmyself in said academic domain. Attending the Politics Society of my college hasexpanded my understanding of differing opinions on current affairs as well aslearning the information which substantiates those claims. This has beenaccomplished through attending lectures by academics and politicians such asTony Benn.

I am also a huge fan of cinema and my favourite directors. Hisidiosyncratic fusion of Surrealism and Expressionism make his worksaesthetically original as well as thought provoking. More recently Ive beennurturing my creative side by writing a sitcom and recently completed the pilotepisode. Being a keen photographer I enjoy taking photographs whenever theopportunity arises and am currently taking an evening course on 35mm filmphotography. This allows me to channel a vague image in my head to somethingrewardingly tangible.

More recently, I travelled Western Europe. I found it culturally fruitfuland instrumental to my personal growth. I visited many historical landmarks andmost notably the Louvre in Paris, a Monastic hospice in the Swiss Alps and theRoyal Palace in Madrid. I also climbed two mountains, forcing me to give totalfocus to the task at hand and synchronise my body and mind as one. I find itessential to my well-being to express myself through whichever medium Iminterested in at the time. Fortunately, the printed page remains a constantsource of inspiration and interest for me, resulting in me being a committed andfervent person. I am confident that I have the qualities and drive to succeed atuniversity and look forward to making a significant contribution to universitylife.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

Currently a student of chemistry at the Beijing Normal University, I amscheduled to graduate in June 1998 with a B. S. degree. The university hasoffered, on the basis of my outstanding academic record, to exempt me from theusually mandatory examinations for graduate studies, should I decide to join itsM. S. program. After weighing all the pros and cons, I now prefer to pursue mygraduate studies with your university, as I think it will put me on betterfooting for my career.

My interest in science in general and chemistry in particular was firstfostered by my family, which has, for several generations, been made up ofprofessionals. My grandfather graduated from the University of Minnesota with aDoctoral degree in engineering, a highly unusual accomplishment for a citizen ofmainland China in those years. My father, a professor of mathematics, was mymain source of inspiration during the three years when I studied with theBeijing Mathematics Olympic School. My mother, a senior engineer of chemicalengineering, was the motivation behind me as I participated in a variety ofscientific activities such as the Solar Energy Club. Such a family environmenthas bestowed on me a gift for natural science that I have never failed to takeadvantage of. It has been my dream to become an outstanding expert in the fieldof chemistry.

Since I entered into the university over three years ago, I have studieddiligently and conscientiously. With that, I have acquired a solid background inchemistry, mathematics and physics. With an overall GPA of 92. 29/100, I have, for three years running, kept myself as the very top student among the 114undergraduates of my grade. I have not confined myself to my coursework, however. I have frequented the library and probably read more chemistryliterature than most of other students. By satisfying my thirst for moreknowledge, I have kept myself abreast of the new developments in chemistryaround the world. I have also excelled in mastering foreign languages. AlthoughI have never majored in the study of any particular language, my Englishproficiency has been improved to a point where it is comparable to that of mostEnglish majors in Chinese universities, and for that, I have been exempted fromhaving to take an English course in the upper years. In recognition of myconsistent excellence, I have been awarded the First-Class Excellent AcademicScholarship for three year.

Education at the Beijing Normal University emphasizes the importance ofhands-on experience. In the summer of 1995, I joined Professor Tians team towork o the synthesis of inorganic materials. In 1996, professor Guo made me amember of his research team, which gave me good exposure to unsymmetricalsynthesis. I am now carrying out (sophisticated) experiment under the directionof Dr. Wang. Through these arrangements, I have gained good experiences inlaboratory research and greatly improved my skills for scientificexperimentation. Starting from the beginning of next semester, I will be writingmy graduation paper under the seasoned guidance of professor (zhong kexue), aresearch fellow from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As the Beijing Normal University specializes in training teachers, I havealso taken quite a number of general education courses, such as phycology, pedagogy and teaching methods. And earlier this year, I was awarded theExcellent Teaching Assistantship for my outstanding performance during theinternship at a high school.

I did not allow my heavy load of study to deter me from taking part inextracurricular activities. As the chair of the charity survives committee oncampus, I honed my organizing skills and augmented my work efficiency. Convincedthat the meaning of life comes from helping others, I have always been mostobliging whenever anyone comes to me for help, which has won me lots of friends.Such personality, combined with my intellectual vigor and determination, shouldstand me ready for any challenges.

I am applying for acceptance into your program because I know that yourcountry has leading the way in the development of chemistry, and I would like toput myself on the cutting edge of the field. I believe that your graduate schoolcan offer the kind of academic quality and environment that I need. I amparticularly interested in analytical and physical chemistry, as I have beenfascinate by both its theoretical foundations and its practical promise. I amalso interested in polymer chemistry and environmental chemistry. The completionof graduate studies with your program will not only enable me to realize my mostcherished childhood dream but also put me in a much better position to serve mycountry.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could give favorable consideration tomy application for acceptance and financial aid.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

“The world of computers is growing at an un-recordable rate everyday, computers are the most influential tools in our lives, they are our present andfuture. In my opinion nothing on the planet can measure the exponential growthand excitement in the computing industry, and industry which I want to be a partof, particularly Software Engineering. As long as computers are around, SoftwareEngineering will take place after all, people need to write and code theprograms like Microsoft Word, and code your games, they don’t just appear. Mygoal is to be part of a team who creates worthwhile, efficient and usefulsoftware for consumers. And the Engineering course if I work at it, which Iwill, will be the key to my success, my current computing A-Level course is agood first step for my goal.

Other courses I am currently studying are Mathematics and Accountancy,Maths is also very important to my selected career, Maths is a universallanguage, it is used by everything, and is very involved with Computers. I enjoynumber work, so an obvious choice at A-Level was Accountancy although I findthis subject less challenging than others, its still interesting and fun, but itdoesn’t grip me like Computing and is not an immediate careerchoice.

I am hard working and currently work at my local ASDA store, I am on theProvisions/Chilled section and am part of a big team, we each depend on eachother to meet deadlines, its quite a demanding job as you have to deal and betrained with customer services and complaints as we work on the shop floorduring open hours. I currently work a 16hour weekend for ASDA, which providesthe money I need for hobbies.

My hobbies include football, going out to the cinema and the odd club orpub, shopping for myself and others, my PC, and the most expensive of all, mygirlfriend. I also like to swim, I find it quite relaxing and it is goodexercise. I also love to eat out, going out for meals with friends is unrivalledby almost any social gathering including clubs and pubs, I love sitting around atable talking and joking about with friends while drinking and eating, itssomething I try and do at least once a month. Friends are very important to meand I try to be the best friend I can.”

Dear teacher:

I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I wouldlike the opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to mebecause of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory topractical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. Iparticularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to thisduring the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s worldchemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range ofindustries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. The broad range of careerpaths, and the opportunity to contribute to society through technologicalinnovation, is for me, one of the main attractions of chemical engineering.

I have applied to take part in the Year In Industry scheme during which Ihope to gain practical experience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to gointo my degree course with improved skills and broader experience. I also hopeto study e-learning courses on project management and presentation skills run bythe IChemE. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understandingand skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well asvisual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team hadto frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and thisexperience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a reallife situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run byREACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise basedupon a typical decommissioning project. I also attended a Headstart course atNewcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activities wasto design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of these experiencesvery challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had to prioritise ourtasks and carefully plan our work.

This year a fellow student and I were awarded ?500 by the EuropeanScholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-levelHistory coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and historyand further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my schoolon a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gainedan insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working withdifferent groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for theschool magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuringthat staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participatingin a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket, which has further enhanced my team working skills.

In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. InSeptember I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested myendurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I havebeen helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying asit gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularlybooks on physics and Russian history. I am really interested in computers and Iam currently trying to configure a Linux based file and print server for my homenetwork.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

This document is being submitted in support of my application for admissioninto your program.

Born in June 1974, I grew up in Lanzhou, a city that boasts of a history ofthousands of years and a cultural heritage that is as colorful as it is old. Fewcities, either in China or beyond, can match it in the richness of architecturalstyles. Stradding the upper Yellow River that sired the Chinese civilization,Lanzhou prides itself in both her past glory laden in the ancient structures onthe north bank and her new found prosperity oozing out of the dazzlinghigh-rises in the south. Although, as a child, I was not always able toarticulate my admiration for such striking contrast, I constantly beheld thecitys landscape in awe. I began to understand, at that young age, thatarchitecture can be a powerful symbol of culture, a people and the spirit of anera.

My first intellectual mentor, one of my parents best friends, was an artistseasoned in oil painting and photography. She often brought me with her when shetraveled, and it was on these trips that her creative mind worked in full gear.I thus observed how human hands could work wonders by recreating the beauty ofnatural scenery in the form of sketches, paintings and photos. What was moreimportant, I got to know that there are professions of creative work that callsfor imagination and craftsmanship.

Fervent with creative art and fascinated with architectural design, I enteredin 1992 into the Department of Architecture of Tsinghua University, Chinas topengineering school, on the strength of my outstanding performance in the highlycompetitive National University Entrance Examinations.

At Tsinghua, I went through five years of vigorous training and thus acquiredexquisite skills in drawing and design. Since I understood from early childhoodthat inspiration often comes from nature, I traveled far and wide throughoutChinas vast territory, setting my foot even in outlying Tibet and Xingjiang, both in the countrys westernmost interior. These travels allowed me to tracemodern Chinas culture to its different sources, and the variety not only deeplyimpressed me but also fired my imagination. In my graduation project, CashiContemporary Art Museum in Xinjiang, I successfully blended a naturalenvironment into my artistic design by using a system of water circulation tosupport and sustain the building. As the most significant resource in anagricultural enclave surrounded by desert, water represents hope for both thepeople and their land. With the water circulation system, the building took onadded vitality.

In mid-1997, I graduated with my B. S. and took a job as a designer with theBeijing-based "company." My career as an architect thus took off.

Once I have settled into the real world of architectural design, I developedmy career path quickly, playing substantial roles in a stream of projects. Todate, my most significant responsibility has been to work as a main designer in(a key state) project, in which I led a group of my colleagues in meeting adaunting challenge. In addition to gaining a profound understanding of thetechnical difficulties necessarily attendant to such large-scale projects, Ilearned to work effectively within a team that also included my clients andcolleagues. The teamwork thus not only strengthened my professional competenceat conceptual and technical design but also honed my leadership skills that canbe put to good use in other situations. As a result, I now feel even moreconfident of myself than I was before.

My experience in general, and the six years of frequent traveling inparticular, has left an indelible mark on my intellectual development. As I cannow readily appreciate a societys cultural, historical and socio-politicalimpact on its architectural styles, I now try to reflect my own cultural andsocial background in my own designs. These days, I view architecture not just asa career but, more importantly, as an expression of my professional progress, and I fell that it is an view more compatible with Western rather than Chinesepedagogy. In any case, I have already been through Chinas best school forarchitectural studies, and I am convince that the further development of myprofessional qualifications requires more advanced training in a school likeyours. I believe that advanced studies under your seasoned guidance will endowme with a broader vision and more profound insights, with which I can make stillmore contribution to my motherland China.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

I got my very first glimpse into law by watching my father, my hero, aPh.D. of law and now the Chinese ambassador to Barbados. I have been inspired byhis work as an international lawyer and a career diplomat while growing up. Formany years, I have been preparing myself through academic and extra-curriculumactivities, hoping that I can make a difference for the world. I believepursuing the Master’s degree in Law at Cornell University will assist me instriving towards the goal.

With my dedication and my parent’s unconditional support, I successfullyentered the …… University, one of the top law schools in China for legaleducation. I have explored a wide range of different law theories in the CivilLaw field and had an opportunity to work on logical writing. It has been theseyears of study at …… University that has enlightened me and laid a solidfoundation for my legal career.

In addition, I have also participated in various extra-curricularactivities. As class monitor, the head of the Information Department in StudentCommittee, and the head of Research Department in our college, I am entrustedwith many responsibilities. My leadership skills and organizational abilitieshave been greatly enhanced. Through various volunteer experiences, I have hadmore opportunities to help the under-privileged. All of these extracurricularactivities are integral parts of a multiple legal education and have contributedto my professional growth.

Amid my strenuous study, I had an opportunity to participate in theAmerican Legal System Study Program summer of my sophomore year and I wasexposed to the great American culture. I engaged in an internship program atMichigan District Court, where I followed Judge ……. It was a great opportunityfor me to see how the courts operate in the United States. The differencesbetween the US and China legal systems provoked my curiosity. I was eager toexplore how to ensure substantive justice in a case while following due processand how to apply precedents to different situations. I went on my secondexchange study-abroad program to ……University fall of 2012 and participated intheir LL.M. program. During this exchange study period, the issue of how tobalance crime control and protection of human rights perplexed me. From then on,the thought of completing the LL.M. program in Cornell Law School, a school withunsurpassed legal education, has propelled me.

As a part of my degree, I interned at different legal departments. I wasvery fortunate to have an opportunity to intern at the Beijing office of ……. Byinvolving myself in cases such as security offerings by Chinese corporateissuers and US security class actions against China-based companies listed on USstock exchanges, I became more aware of how a practicing lawyer gets involved ininternational trades. I researched on whether some foreign statutes areeffective and I participated in legal work and preliminary drafting of researchreports. It was the first time that I felt like I was making a contribution tosociety as lawyer. I sought for other internship opportunities to elevate myprofessionalism after my experience at ……. At Beijing …..Peoples Court, Ilearned the trial procedures in the Chinese court. Through drafting, imputingand proofreading legal documents, I have become more familiarized with thewriting process and became more able to write with greater accuracy. Theinternship at Beijing …… Law Firm brought my overall abilities into fullpractice. From filing a marriage case, collecting evidences, putting it on trialto settling it, I participated in the whole process. With my sight set on morechallenges, I would like to deepen my legal skills and be equipped forinternational experiences. To that end, pursuing an LL.M. at Cornell Law Schoolseems to be the best option.

Dear teacher:

My interest in law stems from the knowledge that it affects every aspect ofour lives, despite our often being oblivious to it. Without law, I would nothave the right to education, to survival and to freedom of speech. Without law, there would be no legal boundary between right and wrong. Law acts as thefoundation of society, and without it we could be deprived of every basicright.

Work experience has allowed me to see how law can be applied to real-lifesituations. During my placement, I was able to look through case files and sitin on interviews with clients as well as doing research using legal textbooks. In addition to showing me how relevant law is to everyday life, work experienceemphasised the all-encompassing nature of law and made me appreciate theworkload of a solicitor. I also did work experience in Stuttgart, spending timewith a judge, a lawyer specialising in German-Irish Law and a firm specialisingin employment law. I was able to sit in on negotiations, see how a judge comesto a verdict and how evidence is analysed. Work experience gave me a flavour ofinternational law, and I enjoyed the complexity of dealing with two differentlegal systems. Not only was this beneficial as additional work experience, I wasalso able to prove to myself that I could live independently and that I ammature enough cope in a foreign environment. I have also carried out researchinto the study of law, attending a pre-law conference in London and reading‘Learning the Law’ by Glanville Williams and ‘The Law Machine’ by Marcel Berlinsand Clare Dyer. I believe the subjects I have chosen will also give me a goodfoundation for studying law. Mathematics would aid me greatly, as it is bothlogical and methodical as well as being challenging. I believe that EnglishLiterature has provided me with skills essential for studying law such asanalysis, comprehension and interpretation. Economics encourages one to selectrelevant information from long passages of text, and to apply theory toreal-life situations. It also presents ethical and moral issues which raisesdiscussion and debate, as a result I have learnt to argue my point coherently, whilst respecting the other’s point of view.

I have also been given several positions of responsibility both insideschool and in extra curricular activities. I represented my class on the StudentCouncil, where I learnt to work successfully as a team member, and improved theschool environment as a result. This year, I have also been appointed Head Girl. This will enable me to further improve my teamwork, organisational skills aswell as demonstrating my leadership potential. As Head Girl, my duties includerepresenting the school and speaking in assembly. I have represented the schoolin public speaking on several occasions, resulting in the school being awardedrunner-up overall for a Safety competition. I also do public speaking in YoungFarmers’ Club, having achieved 1st at county level and 3rd in an impromptu classat national level. Public speaking has required me to be articulate andeloquent. In addition to these, impromptu public speaking requires making thebest use out of the time given for planning and remaining calm under pressure. As Public Relations Officer in my Young Farmers’ Club, I was awarded runner-upat county level. My role required me to write articles about the activities atYoung Farmers’ Club and illustrate these with photos. I needed to be organisedin order to meet the newspapers’ printing deadlines, which required timemanagement. As peer mentor in school, I am trained to deal with information of asensitive nature and am a good listener.

As a result of my responsibilities, I believe I am someone who could adjustwell to university life, and I am enthusiastic about the next level of educationwhere I can focus primarily on law, a subject that motivates and excites me.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

I have always had a fascination with the archaeological world. Archaeologyprovides me with the opportunity to question how my ancestors lived, worked, survived and created what is now the world today. My interest in learning abouthumanity’s past arose from when I was a child, where I was captivated withartifacts in museums. It provided a forum which was to my imagination andintroduced me to experimental archaeology.

As I have matured, my enthusiasm and excitement for archaeology has grownafter visits to Chester and York, where I was able to appreciate not only thearchaeological artifacts found in these places, but also the magnificence of thestanding buildings that remain today. This lead to a particular interest andeagerness to learn more about the ways of everyday life for the people living inthe ancient world, in particular the Roman Empire.

My A-level study of archaeology has demonstrated my commitment to learningtechniques, methods and theories needed to engage in effective research, excavations, delicacy and preservation of artifacts. Reading books such as‘Archaeology is Rubbish’ by Tony Robinson and ‘Excavation’ by Steve Roskams hascontinued my studies. These books have provided me with extra knowledge of howto deal with specialist sites, such as waterlogged and underwater excavations.Additionally, they have developed my understanding of techniques used byarchaeologists to gain the most accurate results when reconstructing thepast.

A-Level Religion and Philosophy has extended my knowledge of archaeologicalaspects such as Roman religion and ritual. Moreover, geology has developed myunderstanding of how geological features can impact the landscape, which isessential for desktop archaeology and investigating settlement. Geology has alsoincreased my ability to date and provide a location as to where certainartifacts may have come from. I have experienced hands on archaeology at the‘Dig’ centre in York. This developed my practical methods of excavation andinterpretation of artifacts. The ‘Dig’ centre gave me the opportunity tofamiliarise myself with animal bones and how they can be used to helparchaeologists in recreating the past.

I have a particular interest for many sports including, karate, rugby andathletics. My commitment to Karate has earned me the rank of 1st Dan black belt, which has qualified me for the teaching of the subject, and given me effectiveleadership qualities. Similarly in rugby, I am in the process of becoming aqualified referee. This has been a valuable experience as it has developed myteam leading, and team work skills.

My extensive work within the college has gained me a position on thecollege council as enrichment representative; where I have brought the studentsand staff closer together. Subsequently, the responsibility and trust placed inme to do this job has provided me with excellent communication and organizationskills. Furthermore, as illustrated above, I am a conscientious, hardworkingstudent and I’m more than willing to accept and overcome new challenges that Imay face during a place at higher education.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

I would like to build on my solid education and experience as an engineerfor a Ph. D. degree in computer science at a distinguished university. I wish inparticular to be trained at an advanced level in software systems, databasesystems, applied-AI and knowledge-based systems. My ultimate goal is to become aprofessor teaching computer science at a Chinese university. I believe thatadvanced training in a quality graduate program will help me realize mygoal.

Having worked in both academia and industries, I have narrowed down mycareer interest to teaching and researching, although I can also appreciate thevalue of other types of career. I feel that, by teaching and researching at anadvanced level within the context of a university, I can make the mostcontribution to the progress of science and technology in my country. This isbecause, to a large developing country like China, the propagation of scientificand technological knowledge is at least as important as the development ofcutting-edge expertise. Enough people are already devoted to mastering thestate-of-the -art in computer science, but not nearly enough people are preparedto spend their life training new generations to be better than they are.

As a computer professional, I am versed in a full range of computerknowledge and skills. As a graduate student, I devoted the better part of mytime to doing research on data consistency, a topic that is fundamental not onlyto the database itself but also to data mining. In my Masters thesis, Iproposed, under the most commonly used division of schemes, a new computingmethod that strikes the best balance to date between cost and computationperformance. In the capacity of a system analyst and project engineer, I haveworked with all kinds of software applications, and created a lot of my own aswell. I once provided a model for the routine on form, which dominates dailyoperations in many offices. Some of my work already stands on fore front of thetechnological progress in China. Some time ago, I met the President of the NewTechnology Development Company affiliated with Beijing University, one ofChinas most distinguished higher-learning institution. He told me that abouttheir new product, a program of textual search within whole context, which canidentify text titles and text intelligently. Much to my surprise, I found thatthe program was virtually the same as the form-based handling system. If I haddone a proper job in disseminating what I had done, there would be thisrepetition of work.

I have developed some insights about the WWW technology, which is now partof the normal office environment. Its widespread use has generated a lot ofdemands for change in the format of both the web server and the web browser. Oneanswer to some of the demands is being met by the adoption of the intranettechnology. With it, the architecture of CGI, +SQL DB+WEB SERVER has become apopular topic. I tried my hand in this area several years ago, and would dearlylove to enhance my expertise.

The ands-on experience in so many different areas has endowed me withstring sensitivity to changes and progress in computer science, particularly toproblems that arise out of routine work. I am known among my colleagues for myability to ask the right questions at the right moment, especially when dealingwith DB, query tools, office models and the Internet. With further training, Ihope to be able to combine ANN or other AIs with DB for information handling. Iam glad to say that my competence at independent research will serve me well asI try to put my ideas into practice.

In view of the above, I would greatly appreciate it if you could accept meinto your program and offer me whatever financial you might be able to. Bygiving me an opportunity to study under your seasoned guidance, you will producenot only another computer scientist but also a computer scientist who will spawnmany other computer scientists.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

In pursuing computer science I have been fascinated by technologies ingeneral and computers in particular from the beginning. I possess a great thirstfor knowledge and learning new disciplines and inspired by the subjectscomplexity and beauty. The intricacy of computing and its application in theworld amazes me, such as the breaking of the enigma code for the victory ofWorld War II, aiding the human genome project for scientific advances, algorithmic trading for increasing the efficiency of financial markets tosparking the digital revolution from the internet to wireless technologies. Ialso enjoy mathematics as it provides me with problem solving skills primarilycalculus, trigonometry and its identities which for me is the pinnacle inmathematics.

In my opinion every query has an explicit solution; we just need toconstruct ways of attaining them. Currently in college I have been introduced toprogramming and on other occasions I have programmed during my spare time. Iprogram in Pascal and Visual Basic at college and tried games programming, myknowledge has developed by reading "V.B 2005 in 24 hours" by James Foxall, Ifound this very enjoyable yet challenging, introducing programming concepts. Ihave produced applications including a petrol pump simulation, a picture vieweramongst others. Additionally I have visited Land Rover in which I programmedrobots to perform tasks such as movement of robots this increased my desire tostudy computing. I am deeply inspired by renowned figures in the industry suchas Alan Turing, and his works such as the "Treatise of The Enigma" and thestored program concept with its historical birth. And John Atanasoff who createdthe first digital computer which has sparked my interest in a career withincomputing. I cherish Edsger Dijkstra comment that, "Computer science is no moreabout computers than astronomy is about telescopes." I appreciate that thecomputer science degree course will allow me to explore further in the subject, principally areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, real-timesystems the theories of computation including the complexity theory amongstothers.

I am highly interested by the theory of concurrency and quantum, advancesin artificial intelligence and the open problems in computer science which Iwould like to pursue after graduation. I feel sincerely that my appetite forcomputer science has not yet been fulfilled and this course will meet mydesires. I read regularly a broad spectrum of publications for exampleprogramming books on V.B and notably the Pc Weekly. This has increased mypassion for computer science and noticeably has increased my knowledge of thesubject. In my interest for the course I have came to know that the course ofcomputer science is interesting and there is a huge variety of optional modulesto select such as parallel algorithms, Neural Computing Etc. this willsuccessfully allow me to specialise in a certain area.

The computing course also integrates notions from maths, engineering andpsychology which I find highly interesting. In studying computing I haverealised computing is not just about a mouse, but each time I switch on acomputer I visualise a computer in a different perspective i.e. the operatingsystem, the various buses and the stored program concept add to the realitybehind the complexities of the computer far beyond the graphical user interfaceto the concepts of computing.

Distant from my studies I enjoy playing tennis, reading the observer onSundays and enjoy Stephen Hawkings A Brief History of Time from thecuriosities of the black hole to the uncertainty principle. I like playing chessand participating in adventurous activities like hiking as I have been to theScottish Highlands on numerous occasions in which I can get away from the bustleof the City to enjoy the beauty, serenity and tranquillity of the world. Howeverin synopsis my academic pursuits are prioritised.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

In order to help me to gain an insight into the world of dentistry, I spentthree weeks observing a dentist in a general practice where I shadowed numerousprocedures varying from routine check-ups, polishing, filings, and root canaltreatment. Whilst shadowing I was lucky enough to assist the dentist byperforming small tasks such as preparing alginate. I also engaged in adiscussion with the dentist on what procedure is most appropriate for a patientwith few remaining upper teeth. After a few suggestions the dentist came to thetreatment plan involving construction of an upper metal partial denture toachieve optimal aesthetic and occlusal function at a financial level the patientcould afford. This experience allowed me to gain a good impression of the day today problems dentists must tackle. My responsibilities included bookingappointments for patients, which gave me the opportunity to communicate with andquestion patients about what they look for in a dentist. One aspect I reallyenjoyed was looking at radiographs and listening to the dentist as he explainedwhat we are looking for and what the x-rays showed. I was astonished at how muchinformation can be discovered from these panoramic x-rays. In order to exploreother fields of dentistry I am also awaiting placement into an oral &maxillofacial department in Charing Cross Hospital, where I will be observingmajor jaw reconstruction.

My interest in Dentistry is backed up by my A-level subjects. I enjoystudying Chemistry specifically about optical isomers and their importance inmedicines. Chemistry also sets the foundation needed to build on the humanbody’s biochemical reactions that I will be learning in dental school. Biologyfacilitates an understanding of the intricate details relating to human anatomyin particular with the nervous system. Economics teaches me the business aspectto running a dental surgery. Along with my A-levels, I will be resittingAS-level modular exams to strengthen the academic side to my application: mydrive and commitment to becoming a dentist will aid me in achieving highgrades.

In my spare time I enjoy taking part in different sport activities. I amparticularly interested in tennis, which I play on a regular basis at Ealinglawn tennis club, where I also volunteer to coach young children. I am also akeen body builder which requires patience, determination and dedication. Myhobbies include producing stencil art using cardboard and exacto knives. This isvery relaxing, and also provides a base from which to build the manual dexterityrequired to be a successful dentist.

As a child, I had to travel and live in many different countries. Not onlydid this give me a good all-round knowledge of languages and customs but alsohelped me develop vital social skills; I learnt to get along with many differentpeople with different cultures and behaviours. I believe I can capitalise onthese skills to help me communicate closely with my patients and understand whatthey require from me.

Dentistry, without a doubt, is the profession for me. I believe I have thequalities that are essential to making a good dentist along with the academicmotivation in order to replace my curiosity for dentistry with knowledge thatwill help me provide quality oral care.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear teacher:

Studying Sports Science at Advanced Level has confirmed that a sportsrelated career is the path I would love to follow. At GCSE, I was able to gainan in-depth understanding of not only the physical side of PE, but also thetheory, which has now been developed by my A level studies. The theory aspect ofPE appeals to me greatly, as it aids my understanding for successful personalcompetition and explains how some elite performers have an additional edge to goon to win major competitions. Achieving this success takes two mainscharacteristics into consideration, the physiological element of sport and alsothe psychological side. Due to these qualities I decided that Biology andPsychology would complement my understanding of Sports Science. In theseadditional studies, I have furthered my knowledge of complicated processes suchas the mechanism of the heart and brain, and applied it to my Sports Scienceknowledge, giving me a more comprehensive understanding of a topic

In 1996, I joined Ipswich Harriers Athletics Club and discovered my passionand talent for throwing the javelin. Since then it has become more than just ahobby; I have pursued the sport, participating in events initially for my club, and more recently for the County. I have consistently been County Champion andattended English Schools this year, not for the first time. I was also offeredthe chance to compete at an international level for Northern Ireland, butunfortunately had a serious back injury at the time, which has since recovered.I am hoping that next season the opportunity to compete at this level will ariseagain to help me develop my sporting career

For the past two and a half years I have been working at Anglia Indoor KartRacing. Once again, this enables me to incorporate another sport I enjoy into mytime. Throughout my time here I have become more experienced, beginning as atrack marshal and now regularly race directing and training new staff. My racedirecting involves having the confidence to brief a large group of people aboutthe running of each meeting and certain safety measures. The job also entails mecommentating on the race, controlling the computer, directing the marshals andtaking responsibly for my colleagues and the customers. I am a trusted member ofthe team and often handle money in the café. I am also very reliable, alwaysbeing punctual

Throughout my time at school I have been keen to help promote it. To dothis I have helped at Open Evenings, and have aided less able pupils with theirreading on a one-to-one basis. I found this very rewarding and satisfying.Another experience that I thoroughly enjoy is assisting in Lower School PElessons. This gives me the opportunity to observe teaching methods, and workwith small groups of children of mixed abilities to improve their skills andconfidence

Besides promoting the school in a social manner I upheld its reputation inits sporting successes. This included captaining the basketball and athleticsteams and playing for the football, cricket, badminton and volleyball teams.

  Yours sincerely,

  xx

Dear teacher:

To live a meaningful life everyday; to continually pursue my predeterminedworthwhile goals. -My view of life.

Could I put myself in the life-threatening working environment? Could Isacrifice my life for the benefits of others? Some people may laugh at my crazyquestion. To me, that is a serious question I have come a long way to find myanswer. “I am not sure whether it is worth to answer”; “What is the true meaningof that question?”

When I was a young child, I watched a soap opera that was about court. Iwas deeply impressed by the judge’s calmness and the lawyer’s eloquence andresource that were showed in this opera. From then on, I hoped to study law someday. Fortunately, I performed well in entrance examination and got enrolled intoxx University. Then I chose law as my major without hesitation. At university, Istudied hard and got GPA 3.4. What’s more, I broadly read all kinds of books, including philosophy, history etc. My teachers’ instruction strengthened myunderstanding of law and makes me understand the significance of law to acountry. From my studies, I had a lot of fun and got more interested in law. Moreover, I actively participated in practice in holidays from common company tolaw firm and tried to apply the theory I had learned into practice.

This summer, I had my internship in counselor department in xxx Group Co Ltdwhich was involved in a business contract dispute, which was submitted to ChinaInternational Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission for arbitration. As arepresentative of the requested applicant, I took part in the evidencecollection in the early arbitration stage and clearly explained why the 5%balance of goods was not paid on time. After knowing the whole case, I visitedmy teacher, an Arbitration Law professor, and listened to her opinions.Realizing the counterpart didn’t completely implement their contract duty, Igave reasons as follows: First, the counterpart company didn’t mention bearingissue, which caused that the delivered machines couldn’t be put into the plantbecause of the disqualification of workshop. Thus overhaul was necessary, whichdelayed production and resulted loss. Based on these reasons, the counterpartdidn’t completely carry out its duty, so our party did not pay the balance ontime. During this time, I found out the evidence and pictures that attestedcounterpart did not give reasonable suggestion and service, and made a statementin the court. Finally, the arbitration turned out that counterpart compensatedour loss, in which the arbiters invoked the reasons that I stated. They had apanel made up of 3 lawyers and 5 company representatives as agents while we justhad 3 persons—two lawyers and me. Under such condition, I was able to cooperatewith them and clearly stated my opinions without any nervousness, which gottheir respect. This matter greatly inspired my enthusiasm on study.

In addition, I took part in the contact draft in several companies. In theprocess, when I met a lot of problems, I often turned to my teachers for help, which made good impression on them. As I cherished each practice, I studied myspecialty and English hard. With effective study method and diligence, I didwell both in English and law, which helped me a lot to get scholarship everyyear. On the other hand, my practice inspired me to study. In practice, Iexercised my legal knowledge. I also realize the big gap between theory and itsapplication—sometimes I have master the rules but I didn’t know how to use it inactual case. My practice experiences have not only strengthened what I learnedbut have supplied new knowledge for me, which is good for my future study andcareer.

  Yours sincerely,

  xxx
