The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is one of the three major annual festivals celebrated in China.
The festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a famous
Chinese poet and statesman, who lived during the Warring States period. He is believed to have drowned himself in the Miluo River as a protest against the corrupt government of his time. The locals who admired him raced to save him in boats, but were unable to reach him in time. They threw rice and food into the river to prevent his body from being eaten by the fish.
Today, the festival is celebrated by racing dragon boats, eating Zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in leaves), and wearing, displaying or hanging mugwort and calamus or iris leaves. The boats used for the dragon boat races are decorated to look like dragons, complete with dragon heads and tails. The races are held on rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water and are a popular event for locals and tourists alike.
The Dragon Boat Festival is an important part of Chinese culture and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm around China and in other parts of the world where there are Chinese communities.
