Restaurants and snack bars in Beijing started serving this seasonal dish last week, and expect a sales peak on Tuesday.
Citizens can also eat a bowl of Laba porridge for free in many Buddhist temples, since the tradition of celebrating Laba Festival originated in Buddhist culture.
In Guanghua Temple in central Beijing, more than 20 workers and volunteer citizens started cooking Laba porridge in twelve huge pots on Monday night, which they expect to hand out to several thousands of temple-goers on Tuesday.
Residents in a Hangzhou community cook and eat Laba porridge together. Laba Festival, the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, falls on January 15 this year.
Fang Hui Chun Tang, an old, well-reputed pharmacy in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, also has the tradition of serving free porridge on Laba. Nutritious Chinese herbs are mixed into their dish, and a xylitol-based recipe is prepared for people with diabetes. The pharmacy expects to receive some 12,000 visitors on the special day.
Neighborhoods in Chinese cities join up to cook and eat Laba porridge. Qi Guifeng, 75, is an organizer of one such public meal in Hangzhou. She called in several senior citizens in her community to buy the materials and serve the porridge in the community's public yard.
"We get together to do a good thing and have fun. We are glad our neighbors can have a bowl of hot porridge," Zhang Meiqin, one of Qi's neighbors, said.
Dragon Boat race Traditions At the center of this festival are the dragon boat races. Competing teams drive their colorful dragon boats forward to the rhythm of beating drums. These exciting races were inspired by the villager's valiant attempts to rescue Chu Yuan from the Mi Lo river. This tradition has remained unbroken for centuries.
Tzung Tzu A very popular dish during the Dragon Boat festival is tzung tzu. This tasty dish consists of rice dumplings with meat, peanut, egg yolk, or other fillings wrapped in bamboo leaves. The tradition of tzung tzu is meant to remind us of the village fishermen scattering rice across the water of the Mi Low river in order to appease the river dragons so that they would not devour Chu Yuan.
Ay Taso The time of year of the Dragon Boat Festival, the fifth lunar moon, has more significance than just the story of Chu Yuan.
history has witnessed many changes in chinese families in transition. here i just want to focus your eyes on the change in the size of chinese family and the role of chinese women.
generally speaking, the size of chinese families is shrinking. national census conducted in 20xx showed a chinese family has 3.6 members on average, down from the 3.97 reported in 1990 and 4.43 in 1982.familied with only parents and one child are mushrooming and will make the majority of chinese families. the phenomenon showed chinese traditional extended families are turning into nuclear families.
our interview indicated that family planning policy accounts for the change. the basic requirements of the policy are late marriage and late child bearing so as to have fewer but healthier babies. with the enforcement of the policy, most people agree that with one child to bring up, parents can devote more of their attention to him or her, and at the same time enjoy more freedom; to the child, he or she can receive more care and hugs. the benefits make it popular to set up a small, happy and harmonious family.not only does small family contribute to the pursuit of scientific and civilized lifestyle, but it also helps women get rid of the burden of frequent child bearing and heavy burden after marriage. however, the most important thing is that women are playing a more and more important role in chinese family.
in the past, each family had a head, who had absolute authority at home, and the final say in family affairs. but now in most chinese families, husband and wife work out household purchases together. in some cases, women have a stronger voice in household purchases, though it is usually the men who foot the bill.
chinese women were subject to men and were confined to household chores in those days. nowadays, however, many women have their own career, apart from those responsibilities for family. the change of their economic status, to a large extent, attribute their improved role in family.
according to this study, chinese families are undergoing many changes, the results of which are desirable. in the future, we believe that the structure of chinese families will become better.
Throughout most of Chinas long history, the relationships between people were based on carefully prescribed forms of behavior, that is,etiquette.Learning and following etiquette is so important that people are always judged by how closely they follow these rules of behaviors. For those who do not follow those prescribed rules of conduct, they are regarded as uncivilized barbarians.
However,as China has been increasingly entangled in the global village, many Chinese people, especially the young, have lost some traditions because of the influences of Western cultures.According to a famous professor, the majority of Chinese college students have not had systematic training on traditional Chinese etiquette. As for me, traditional etiquette should be taught in class.
Firstly, if college students can receive a systematic education in traditional etiquette in class, they can get more prepared for the future. As is known, college students usually have learnt some traditional etiquette through daily interaction with friends and relatives, but the process is time-consuming. They have to be sensitive enough to observe other peoples behaviors and then know what proper behaviors in different social situations are. Some times the learning process is by trial and error. They can only form right behaviors after breaking the rules of conduct and being corrected by the costly consequence. If they have already taken a systematic etiquette course in college, they can follow proper etiquette and have a more guaranteed future.
Secondly, as these meticulous rules of conduct have been formed throughout Chinese history, they are unique Chinese characteristics and are inseparable to Chinese culture. With the advent of globalization ,western culture is so influential that many young people often look to Western customs and etiquette as being fashionable. For example, nowadays most young women in China would like to wear western-style white dresses and veils at wedding while traditional Chinese weddings feature red gowns for brides and white is an absolute taboo. In the long term,if the trend to adopt western etiquette can not be curbed, the Chinese generations in the future will lose their cultural identity.
Furthermore, the extinction of Chinese etiquette will be to the detriment of the diversity of global culture. To some extent, the course can serve to arouse college students cultural pride and help to preserve and further develop Chinese culture. In conclusion, taking traditional Chinese etiquette in college will not only make graduates more prepared for their future, but also can constitute an important measure for college students to form Chinese cultural identity and therefore to preserve Chinese tradition and further develop it.
As people respond to incentives, they will change their behaviors if they perceive that costs or benefits change. This principle seems to find wide application in our daily lives. When college graduates learn that receiving a master degree will give them an upper hand in the job market, many decide to take part in post-graduate entrance examinations. In China, it is regarded as following suit. Though we admire those who pride themselves on sticking to their ideals and principles, odds may not be against those who follow suit.Generally speaking, there are both advantages and disadvantages of following suit.
Firstly, following suit is indicative of the fact that followers have no indispensable beliefs or fixed principles and hence they are flexible in the vicissitudes of lives. When the social context changes and opportunities arise, those followers are the first to respond and make decisions.Take the English training service for example. In early 1990s, increasing number of college graduates decided to study overseas and hence English training service was in large demand.Given that forerunners had make a fortune by providing training programs to those graduates, many businessmen just followed suit and established several training schools. Undoubtedly, those who followed suit when the market did not reach saturation did make money.
Secondly, it is noteworthy that following suit can avoid making mistakes. For those forerunners, there is no previous information at their hand, and therefore, it will take a longtime to learn and improve by trial and error. During the period of trial and error, forerunners will encounter unexpected difficulties and pressures. As a result, when those become successful in certain domains, they have proved that the path will lead to success, providing both pros and cons. On the contrary, followers need not experience the process of trial and error. They can just imitate their forerunners proven pattern of behaviors and have easier access to success. There are also some disadvantages of following suit. When there are so many followers, the world will become crowded and odds are against those later followers.
Furthermore, following suit prevents innovation and creation, which is to the detriment of our society. However, whether one should follow suit or not is not simply a to-be-or-not-to-be question. A basic assumption of individual person is that everyone is rational. So one should carefully calculate costs and benefits in specific circumstances before they decide to follow suit or not.
health gains in developing countries
from the graph we can see the health gains in developing cotmtries. in l960, the average life span or life epectancy was only 40 years old. in 1990, after thirty years, the life epectancy rose to 60. at the same time, with the life epectancy going up, the infant mortality is coming down. in 1960 the infant mortality was 200 deaths per 1000 births. that is, about 200 infants died at birth among 1000 babies born. in 1990, the infant mortality declined to 100 deaths per 1000 births.
what are the reasons for this situation? i think it lies in three respects. first, economy is developing as time progresses. people am better off than before. second, education plays an important role. people are better educated and more civilized. they are more aware that good health ensures success in life and work, third, the government pays more attention to the protection of the environment. more measures are being taken to deal with the problem of pollution. that is why life epectancy is on the rise and infant mortality on the decline.
It is fine today.I made an appointment with my foreign friend Peter to visit the Great Wall on Badaling. We set out early in the morning. We first took the subway and then the bus.On reaching the foot of the Great Wall,
the Ming Dynasty, and little of it remains. The Great Wall of China was originally a project of Qin dynasty designed to this wall was located much further north than the current wall built during the Ming Dynasty, and little of it remains.
221 and 208 BC,it is now believed to have been started earlier. The 15-foot-high,25-foot-wide,1,500-mile-longan angry population rose up in rebellion against the Qin Dynasty, and in207 BC the Han Dynasty began.Because of
he Mutianyu section of the Great Wall, 70 kilometers northeast of Beijing, is linked to the Gubeikou section on the east and the Badaling section on the west. It is one of the best sections of the Great Wall.
The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is crenelatted for watching and shooting at the invading enemy. Some of the battle forts on the wall are as close as 50 metres apart.
Jinshanling Section
Located in Miyun County northeast of Beijing, the Jinshanling division of the Great Wall, like the Simatai division, belongs to the Gubeikou section of the colossal defence barrier.
The battlements in the Jinshanling division of the Great Wall are built along the ridge of a mountain, where /he soldiers can resist the invading enemy by taking advantage of the high terrain.
A decrepit battle fort at dusk often reminds one of the battles in ancient times.
Simatai Section
Located to the east of Jinshanling, the Simatai division of the Great Wall is 3,000 metres long and has 35 battle forts. The wall rises and falls with the precipitous mountain ridge, while the battle forts are located high up the hills.
Alarm was raised by means of smoke signals, at night by fire. Smoke was produced by burning a mixture of wolf dung, sulfur and saltpeter. Shots were fired at the same time. Thus an alarm could be relayed over 500km within just a few hours.
